How to explain a Psychiatrist to your child

A psychiatrist is a special kind of doctor who helps people when their feelings, thoughts, or worries get so big or confusing that it's hard to do everyday things like going to school, playing with friends, or sleeping at night. They sit and talk with people in a quiet office, asking questions and really listening to understand what's going on inside someone's mind. They look at how the brain works, kind of like a mechanic looks at an engine, and sometimes they write prescriptions for medicine that can help the brain feel more balanced and calm.

This work matters because everyone's brain deserves to feel healthy, just like everyone's body does. When someone is so sad they can't get out of bed, or so worried they can't think straight, a psychiatrist helps them feel better so they can go back to doing the things they love—like laughing with family, learning new things, or just feeling okay again. They help people find their way back to themselves when everything feels too heavy or mixed up.
