How to explain a Dentist to your child

A dentist takes care of people's teeth and mouths. Every day, they look inside patients' mouths using a small mirror and a bright light to check for cavities (tiny holes in teeth) or other problems. They use special tools to clean teeth, fill cavities with a hard material that acts like a patch, and sometimes pull out teeth that are too damaged to save. Dentists work with dental hygienists who help clean teeth, and with assistants who hand them tools and make patients feel comfortable in the big chair.

When your teeth are healthy, you can eat your favorite foods without pain, smile with confidence, and talk clearly. Dentists help fix toothaches so kids and grown-ups don't have to hurt when they're trying to enjoy a meal or sleep at night. They also teach people how to brush and floss the right way, so teeth stay strong for years and years. By keeping mouths healthy, dentists make sure everyone can keep chewing, smiling, and living without tooth trouble.
