An emergency room doctor works in the part of the hospital where people go when something happens suddenly and they need help right away. They work with nurses, other doctors, and technicians as a team, and they have to think quickly because new patients keep arriving all day and night.

This work matters because when someone gets hurt or suddenly feels very sick, they need someone who knows exactly what to do to help them. The emergency room doctor makes sure that a scraped knee gets cleaned so it doesn't get infected, or that someone having chest pain gets the right medicine quickly. They help people who are scared or in pain feel safer, and they decide who needs to stay in the hospital and who can go home to rest.
