How to explain a Doctor to your child

A doctor listens to people who feel sick or hurt, and figures out what's wrong and how to help them feel better. They use tools like a stethoscope (that's the thing that lets them hear your heartbeat), a little flashlight to look in your ears and throat, and sometimes machines that take pictures of the inside of your body. Every day, they might check a baby to make sure she's growing strong, help someone with a sore throat, or put a cast on a broken arm. They work with nurses, other doctors, and families to make a plan that helps each person heal.

When you're sick or hurt, it can be scary and uncomfortable. A doctor's job is to figure out the puzzle of what's happening inside your body and help you get back to playing, learning, and doing the things you love. Sometimes they give medicine, sometimes they teach you how to take care of yourself, and sometimes they do procedures—like stitching up a cut—so your body can heal the right way. They're there so you don't have to stay sick or in pain for long.
