How to explain a Prosecutor to your child

A prosecutor is a lawyer who works for the government, and their job is to prove in court when someone has broken the law. Every day, they read police reports, talk to witnesses (people who saw what happened), and look at evidence like photos or videos. They meet with police officers, judges, and sometimes the people who were hurt by a crime. Then they stand up in a courtroom and explain to a jury—a group of regular people—exactly what happened and why it matters. For example, if someone stole money from a store, the prosecutor shows the receipts, the security camera footage, and asks questions to help everyone understand the truth.

This work matters because it helps keep neighborhoods safe and makes sure rules are fair for everyone. When someone breaks a rule that hurts other people, the prosecutor's job is to make sure the right person is held responsible, so the same bad thing doesn't keep happening. They also make sure innocent people aren't punished by mistake. It's like being a detective and a teacher at the same time—finding out what really happened and helping everyone see it clearly.
