How to explain a Lawyer / Attorney to your child

A lawyer is someone who helps people understand and use the rules we all agree to follow. Every day, they read lots of papers—contracts, letters, court documents—and they talk to people who have questions or problems about those rules. They might sit at a big desk with law books and a computer, writing letters or preparing to speak in a courtroom. For example, if two neighbors disagree about where a fence should go, a lawyer helps them figure out what the rules say and what's fair.

This work matters because rules only help us if someone knows how to use them. When a family buys a house, a lawyer makes sure all the papers are correct so no one gets tricked. When someone is accused of breaking a rule, a lawyer stands beside them to make sure they're treated fairly. Lawyers help people solve problems with words and fairness instead of fighting, so everyone knows what to expect and feels heard.
