How to explain a Judge to your child

A judge sits in a courtroom—a special room where people come to solve disagreements or decide what should happen when someone breaks a rule. The judge listens carefully to lawyers (people who help explain each side of the story), looks at evidence like photos or documents, and sometimes hears from witnesses who saw what happened. They wear a long black robe so everyone knows who is in charge of keeping things fair and calm. For example, a judge might listen to a police officer explain why they arrested someone, then decide if that person needs to stay in jail or can go home while they wait for a trial.

This work matters because everyone deserves a chance to tell their side of the story before big decisions are made. Judges help keep neighborhoods safe by making sure people who hurt others are held responsible, and they protect people who didn't do anything wrong from being punished unfairly. When someone feels scared or treated badly, a judge can step in and make sure the rules are followed—so families, schools, and towns can trust that everyone gets treated fairly, no matter who they are.
