How to explain a Pilot to your child

A pilot flies airplanes or helicopters to carry people and things from one place to another. Before every flight, they check the weather, walk around the plane to make sure everything looks right, and plan the route on a computer or map. During the flight, they watch lots of dials and screens that tell them how high they are, how fast they're going, and if the engines are working well. They talk to people on the ground using a radio, and they work with a co-pilot who helps them make decisions and fly the plane safely.

Pilots help families visit grandparents who live far away, and they bring medicine to hospitals that need it quickly. They fly people to weddings, vacations, and new homes in other cities. When the weather gets bumpy or a light on the dashboard blinks, pilots know exactly what to do to keep everyone calm and safe. Flying a plane takes a lot of practice and paying close attention, so that everyone inside arrives right where they need to be.
