How to explain a Marine to your child

A Marine is a soldier who trains to protect people and help during emergencies, both at home and in other countries. Every day, Marines practice skills like running obstacle courses, learning how to use radios and maps, and working together as a team. They might spend the morning doing exercises to stay strong, then practice setting up tents and medical stations, or learn how to drive big vehicles like trucks and amphibious craft that can go on both land and water. They work alongside doctors, engineers, pilots, and other Marines, solving problems like how to bring food and water to people who need it or how to rescue someone in danger.

Marines matter because they're ready to help when something serious happens—like after a hurricane when people need rescue boats, or when a country asks for help keeping neighborhoods safe. They also guard important places like embassies where diplomats work, and they can deliver supplies to places that are hard to reach. When a Marine trains hard and works with their team, they're getting ready to step in during moments when people really need someone calm, strong, and prepared to help.
