How to explain a Coast Guard Officer to your child

A Coast Guard Officer leads a team of sailors who keep watch over the ocean near our shores. They drive big ships and helicopters, use radios and radar screens to look for boats in trouble, and check that fishing boats and cargo ships are following safety rules. Some days they might rescue a family whose sailboat got caught in a storm, or help a crew whose engine broke down far from land. Other days they watch for anyone trying to sneak dangerous things into the country, or clean up oil spills that could hurt fish and birds.

This work matters because the ocean is beautiful but can be dangerous, and people need help out there. When someone's boat sinks or a swimmer gets pulled too far from shore, the Coast Guard rushes out to bring them home safely. They also make sure the water stays clean so kids can swim at the beach and fishermen can catch the fish we eat for dinner. Coast Guard Officers train their teams so everyone knows exactly what to do when someone calls for help.
