How to explain a Academic Advisor to your child

An academic advisor meets with students at a school or college to help them plan which classes to take. They sit at a desk with a computer, looking at schedules and lists of all the different courses someone needs to graduate. They ask students questions like "What do you want to learn?" or "Are you finding math class too hard right now?" Then they help figure out a plan—like a map—so the student knows exactly what to do next. For example, if a student wants to become a teacher, the advisor shows them which classes they need to sign up for this year and next year.

This work matters because choosing classes can feel confusing, like standing in front of a huge library and not knowing which book to read first. The advisor helps students not get lost or stuck. When students pick the right classes and finish them on time, they can graduate and move on to the job or the next school they're dreaming about.
