How to explain a VP of Engineering to your child

A VP of Engineering is like the leader of a team of people who build things with computers. Every day, they talk with engineers (the people who write code and make apps and websites work), designers, and other teams to decide what to build next and how to solve tricky problems. They spend time in meetings, looking at charts and lists on their computer screen, and asking questions like "Is this working well?" or "What if we tried it this way?" For example, if the app is running too slowly, they help the team figure out why and what to fix first.

This work matters because when someone builds something on a computer—like a game, a map that helps you find your way, or a tool doctors use—lots of pieces have to work together perfectly. The VP of Engineering makes sure everyone is building the right things in the right order, so people can use what gets made without it breaking or getting confusing.
