How to explain a Veterinarian to your child

A veterinarian is a doctor for animals. Every day, they check pets like dogs and cats to make sure they're healthy—they listen to their hearts with a stethoscope, look in their ears and mouth, and feel their belly to see if anything hurts. They give shots to protect animals from getting sick, fix broken bones, and sometimes do surgery to help an animal who's been hurt or has something wrong inside their body. They work with pet owners, vet techs who help hold the animals gently, and sometimes they visit farms to check on horses, cows, or goats.

This work matters because animals can't tell us when something hurts or feels wrong. A veterinarian figures out what's happening and helps the animal feel better, so your dog can run and play again, or your cat stops hiding under the bed. When a pet is healthy and happy, the whole family feels better too. Veterinarians also teach people how to take good care of their animals—what to feed them, how much exercise they need, and when to come back for a check-up.
