How to explain a Software Engineer to your child

A software engineer writes instructions that tell computers what to do. They sit at a computer and type code—special words and symbols that machines can understand—to build the apps on your phone, the games you play, or the websites you visit. They work with other engineers, designers who make things look nice, and people who test to make sure everything works. For example, if a button on a website isn't working right, a software engineer figures out why and fixes the code so it does what it's supposed to do.

This work matters because almost everything we use now has a computer inside it or connects to one. Software engineers help make sure your video calls with grandma don't freeze, that your favorite learning app teaches you new things, and that doctors can look up important information about their patients quickly. When something breaks or could work better, they're the ones who go in and make it right, so the tools we rely on every day actually help us instead of frustrate us.
