How to explain a Penetration Tester to your child

A penetration tester is someone who tries to break into computers and websites—on purpose! Their job is to find the weak spots before bad people do. They sit at their computer and use special programs to test if passwords are too easy to guess, if doors into the system were left unlocked, or if there are secret ways to sneak in. They write reports about what they found and then work with other tech people to fix those holes. For example, they might pretend to be a hacker trying to steal information from a bank's website, so the bank knows exactly where to build stronger locks.

This work matters because it keeps our information safe. When your family buys something online or when you play a game on a tablet, penetration testers have helped make sure nobody can steal your passwords or peek at private stuff. They're like friendly burglars who test all the locks on the doors and windows, then tell the owners which ones need to be stronger. Because they did their job, the real bad guys have a much harder time getting in.
