How to explain a Journalist / Reporter to your child

A journalist is someone who finds out what's happening in the world and tells other people about it. They ask lots of questions, talk to people who saw or did interesting things, and write down the answers. They use notebooks, cameras, voice recorders, and computers to collect information. For example, if there's a big storm coming, a journalist might talk to the weather expert, visit neighborhoods that could flood, and then write or film a story so everyone knows what to expect.

Journalists help people know what's going on around them—like if a street is closed, if a new playground is opening, or if something unsafe is happening that families should watch out for. When you know what's happening, you can make better choices, like which route to take to school or whether to bring an umbrella. Journalists check facts carefully so the information people get is true and helpful, not just guesses or rumors.
