How to explain a Data Engineer to your child

A data engineer builds and fixes the invisible pipes that carry information inside computers. Every day, they write special instructions called code to collect numbers and facts from lots of different places—like how many people visited a website, or which songs everyone listened to—and move all that information to one safe spot where other people can use it. They work with scientists, designers, and bosses who need to look at the information to make decisions. For example, they might build a system that gathers all the temperatures from weather stations around the country so forecasters can see what's happening.

This work matters because it helps other people find answers to important questions. Doctors might need data engineers to organize patient information so they can spot patterns and help sick people get better faster. Teachers use information organized by data engineers to see which students need extra help with reading or math. When the pipes break or get clogged, a data engineer figures out what went wrong and fixes it so everyone can keep doing their jobs.
