How to explain a Chief Technology Officer to your child

A Chief Technology Officer—or CTO for short—is the person who decides which computers, programs, and tech tools a company should use to do its work. They spend their days meeting with engineers, designers, and other team members to solve problems like "How do we make our website faster?" or "What's the safest way to keep everyone's information private?" They look at charts on screens, test new ideas, and make plans for building things that don't exist yet. For example, if a company wants to create a new app, the CTO helps figure out what it should do and how to build it without breaking.

This work matters because almost everything we use—from the games on a tablet to the way doctors keep track of your health records—runs on technology that someone had to plan and protect. When a CTO does their job well, websites load quickly when you need them, your family's photos stay safe in the cloud, and apps work the way they're supposed to. They make sure the people building the technology have what they need and that the technology actually helps people get things done.
