How to explain a Chief Executive Officer to your child

A Chief Executive Officer—or CEO—is the person who makes the biggest decisions for a whole company. They spend their days in meetings with team leaders, looking at reports on computers and tablets to see how the business is doing, and deciding what the company should do next. For example, a CEO might meet with the head of the toy factory to decide whether to make more teddy bears or start making a new kind of puzzle. They talk to many different people—designers, accountants, engineers, salespeople—and help everyone work toward the same goal.

This work matters because someone needs to make sure all the parts of a company work together smoothly. When a CEO makes good choices, the people who work there keep their jobs and can take care of their families. The products people buy—like the cereal in your cupboard or the shoes on your feet—get made and delivered to stores because a CEO helped guide the team. They help keep the whole machine running so everyone can do their part.
