How to explain a Chef / Cook to your child

A chef or cook works in a kitchen, turning raw ingredients like vegetables, meat, and rice into the meals people eat at restaurants, cafes, or hotels. They chop, stir, sauté (that means cooking quickly in a hot pan), bake, and taste to make sure everything is just right. They use sharp knives, big pots, ovens, and stoves, and they read recipes or create new dishes from their imagination. Chefs work alongside other cooks, dishwashers, and servers, and they have to move fast when lots of people are hungry at the same time.

When you go out to eat for someone's birthday or just because you're hungry, a chef is the person making sure your food tastes good, looks pretty on the plate, and is safe to eat. They help people celebrate special moments, try flavors they've never tasted before, and feel taken care of when they sit down to a meal. A cook's work means that families, friends, and travelers get to enjoy warm, delicious food without having to make it themselves.
