How to explain a Bookkeeper to your child

A bookkeeper keeps track of all the money that comes in and goes out of a business. Every day they write down purchases, sales, and payments in special computer programs or notebooks called ledgers. They match up receipts with bank statements to make sure everything adds up correctly, like checking that the bakery really did pay for the flour that was delivered. They work with business owners, accountants, and sometimes people who send bills or receive payments.

This work matters because it helps everyone know the truth about the money. Without a bookkeeper, a store owner might think they have enough money to buy new supplies when they really don't, or they might forget to pay someone who did good work for them. Bookkeepers make sure bills get paid on time, workers get their paychecks, and the business knows if it's earning enough to keep the lights on and stay open.
