How to explain a Senior Software Engineer to your child

A Senior Software Engineer writes instructions in special computer languages that tell computers, phones, and tablets what to do. Every day, they sit at their desk with a big screen (or two!) and type these instructions, which we call "code." They also spend time talking with other engineers, designers, and people who have ideas for new things to build. They help fix problems when something isn't working right—like when a button doesn't click or a picture won't load—and they teach younger engineers how to write better code.

The work matters because almost everything we use has software inside it. The apps that help you video-call your grandparents, the games you play, the websites where grown-ups order groceries or check the weather—a software engineer helped build all of those. When they do their job well, things work smoothly and people can do what they need to do without getting frustrated. They're like careful builders making sure the invisible parts inside our devices actually work.
