How to explain a Lead Software Engineer to your child

A Lead Software Engineer writes instructions, called code, that tell computers what to do. They spend their days typing on a keyboard, drawing diagrams on whiteboards, and talking with other engineers about how to build or fix programs. They also help newer engineers learn tricks and solve tricky bugs—mistakes in the code that make things work the wrong way. For example, they might figure out why a website freezes or help their team decide the best way to add a new button that does something useful.

This work matters because almost everything we use now has a computer inside it or connects to one—phones, cars, even the machines at the doctor's office. When a Lead Software Engineer and their team do their job well, apps open quickly, games don't crash, and people can do things like video call grandma or order groceries without anything going wrong. They make sure the digital tools we count on actually work the way they're supposed to.
